  22. FileStor offers reliable solutions to today's most pressing data 
  23. storage problems.  FileStor provides a proven strategy for 
  24. backing up and restoring your valuable data, and an easily 
  25. accessible set of tools to effect that strategy.

  33. 2 System Requirements
  34. =================================================================
  35.  
  36. The System Requirements needed to run FileStor are:
  37.  
  38. - A 386 or 486 PC System
  39. - At least 4 MB of total memory
  40. - DOS 4.01 or greater
  41. - Windows 3.1/3.11 running in 386 Enhanced Mode; Win95 compatibility
  42. - A SCSI tape drive and a ASPI-Compliant SCSI host adapter

  45. 3 New Features
  46. =================================================================
  47. Tape Express is a program that allows you to back up your data quickly
  48. and easily from within Window's File Manager.  Whenever you run File 
  49. Manager, the Tape Express icon will be displayed, and there will be an 
  50. additional PSM (Personal Storage Management) menu item located on 
  51. File Manager's menu bar.
  52.  
  53. To back up files from your hard disk to tape, simply select those 
  54. files or directories with the usual File Manager methods, and use the 
  55. mouse to drag those selected files and directories onto the Tape 
  56. Express icon.  Those files will then be backed up to tape.
  57.  
  58. There are also two options available from the Tape menu, Complete backup
  59. of drive and Modified files backup of drive, that allow you to back up 
  60. either all files on a volume, or all changed files on a volume with one 
  61. menu command.
  62.  
  63. You can change any of the backup options, such as append or overwrite 
  64. by choosing the Options menu item, or by double-clicking the Tape 
  65. Express icon and setting those options in the Options dialog box.

  68. 4 Trouble Shooting
  69. =================================================================
  70.  
  71. -   If you are using a temporary swap file in Windows and you are 
  72.     experiencing problems with installation (failures creating 
  73.     librarian files, or out of disk space errors), ensure that 
  74.     you have sufficient disk space for the installation operation.
  75.     Install uses some temporary files during installation.  If 
  76.     Windows needs to allocate more disk space to the temporary 
  77.     swap file while install is active and you already have limited 
  78.     disk space, this type of problem may be encountered.  
  79.     Free additional disk space and retry the installation process.
  80.  
  81. -   If you are using a diskless workstation booting from a floppy (A:),
  82.     you must have a second floppy drive (B:) you can use to install
  83.     FileStor.
  84.  
  85. -   This release now includes NWIPXSPX.DLL to resolve an issue where
  86.     NWNET.DLL would not load.

  89. =================================================================

  95. used in the naming of Jobs or media groups:

  101. Multi-Drive Systems

  104. In Multi-Drive systems the lowest SCSI ID drive is selected for
  105. Import or Identify operations.
  106.  
  107. Individual drive selection is not supported in this release. Tape
  108. spanning operations between drives is supported however.

  112. Location of files required at system startup
  113. --------------------------------------------
  114.  
  115. FileStor requires the following file be present when you start 
  116. your system.  By default, it is installed to the root directory of the
  117. disk from which your system boots, and CONFIG.SYS is modified to call it
  118. appropriately:            
  119.     
  120.     FSPLMSG.SYS
  121.  
  122. If you would prefer to move this file somewhere else, you may do so 
  123. providing you update CONFIG.SYS accordingly.

  126. RAM Drives
  127. ----------
  128.  
  129. FileStor does NOT support operations against RAM drives, and does not 
  130. normally display them in the File System window.  Some third-party RAM 
  131. drives may appear as standard disks, however.  If you select them, you will
  132. be prompted to supply a unique name for the drive.  After power-down, the
  133. name will be lost, and you will be re-prompted if you select that
  134. drive icon again.

  138. Tagging and viewing
  139. -------------------
  140.  
  141. A hollow check mark next to a directory (in place of the red
  142. check-mark) has been added to the 'File System' and 'Librarian' 
  143. windows.  This mark indicates that some file(s) are tagged below this
  144. directory; thereby, indicating where files have been tagged.
  145.  
  146. If no files are tagged in the File System, it is assumed that all 
  147. files should be backed up for the selected drive.
  148.

  150. Rescue Disk
  151. -----------
  152.  
  153. The Rescue floppy disk contains a subset of FileStor software, and basic
  154. information necessary to restore your last complete and differential 
  155. backups on protected drives.  You can restore any "protected" drive 
  156. using the Rescue disk, but you only NEED to use it if your Windows
  157. or FileStor install disk has crashed.
  158.  
  159. If you wish to Rescue a drive, first try to bring up Windows and FileStor. 
  160. If you can do that, just click the Rescue Icon, and proceed from there.  
  161. If you can't run Windows or FileStor, then insert your Rescue disk into 
  162. a floppy, and type A: (or B:), followed by Enter, then type RESCUE, 
  163. followed by Enter.  Follow the prompts, and you will be able to recover 
  164. your Windows or FileStor installation drive without having to reinstall 
  165. either one!  Refer to Section 8 for additional information on RESCUE under
  166. Win95.

  170. 6 Performance
  171. ======================================================================
  172.  
  173. The performance of FileStor is enhanced by installing 
  174. disk caching.  SMARTDrive supplied with Windows 3.1 set to at least 
  175. 1 MByte is recommended.
  176.  
  177. Librarian search speeds may be improved by identifying whole or partial
  178. path names.
  179.

  291. 9 Win95 Notes
  292. =================================================================

  294. FileStor does not handle Win95 file names greater than the 8.3 format.
  295. If you wish to use FileStor to backup your local Win95 drive, you will
  296. need to use the LFNBK utility supplied by MicroSoft.  This utility can
  297. be found on the Win95 CD under ADMIN\APPTOOLS\LFNBACK.  This utility also
  298. provides a README.TXT which should be read.  To backup a Win 95 system
  299. you must do the following:
  300.  
  301.     1.  Turn tunneling off
  302.     2.  Run LFNBK /B C: in a Win95 DOS box
  303.     3.  Reboot the system
  304.     4.  Locate the FileStor executable with the Explorer (by default
  305.             C:\FILESTOR\FILESTOR.EXE)
  306.     5.  Backup C:
  307.  
  308. To return your Win95 system back to its original normal operation you 
  309. must do the following:
  310.  
  311.     1.  Run LFNBK /R C: in a Win95 DOS box
  312.     2.  Turn tunneling back on
  313.     3.  Reboot
  314.  
  315. To restore your Win95 drive, you must do the following:
  316.  
  317.     1.  Turn tunneling off
  318.     2.  Run LFNBK /B C: in a Win95 DOS box
  319.     3.  Reboot the system
  320.     4.  Locate the FileStor executable with the Explorer (by default
  321.             C:\FILESTOR\FILESTOR.EXE)
  322.     5.  Restore C:
  323.
